Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council - EPSRC
EPSRC is one of a family of Government research councils that fund research and post graduate education and education. It provides financial support for the Universities' Transport Partnership.

The Profession

Transport professionals come from a wide range of disciplines. This is reflected in the professional bodies of which they might be members, which include:

• Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport
• Institution of Civil Engineers
• Institution of Highways and Transportation
• Royal Town Planning Institute

The Transport Planning Society is a learned society which facilitates, develops and promotes knowledge, understanding and best practice in transport planning.

The Transport Planing Society and the Institution of Highways and Transportation jointly provide a professional qualification for transport planners, Transport Planning Professional.

Other professional bodies associated with transport include the Institution of Engineering and Technology, the Institute of Highway Incorporated Engineers, the Royal Statistical Society, Social Research Association, the Market Research Society, the Regional Studies Association, British Computer Society.

Sector Skills Councils

There are three Sector Skills Councils covering different aspects of transport.

• GoSkills is the passenger transport sector skills council, and includes transport planning within its remit.
• Skills for Logistics is concerned with moving, handling and storing goods.
• ConstructionSkills, covers the construction industry including design.

Other Organisations

A number of organisations represent various interests within transport. These include:

• Universities Transport Studies Group, UTSG, which provides a focus for those involved in transport teaching and research in universities and institutions of higher education in the UK and Ireland.
• Transport Economists Group, a forum for people involved in transport economics.
• National TravelWise, a network of local authorities working to promote healthy and sustainable transport.
• Association for Commuter Travel, for organisations concerned with the introduction and management of site and local Travel Plans.
• the Association for European Transport promotes networking and the exchange of ideas, Information and opportunities amongst its members, and organises Europe's leading annual transportation conference, the European Transport Conference.
• Local Transport Today, published every two weeks, provides comprehensive coverage of transport politics, policies, plans and projects in the UK.
