The Universities' Transport Partnership, UTP, is a group of eight UK universities providing Masters level education in transport, in the form of full Masters courses as well as short, Continuing Professional Development (CPD), courses.
Making Connections - Teaching Tomorrow's Transport Leaders
Students at the UTP universities make connections that serve them well through their careers. They get to know and work with leading academics, through tutorials, project work and dissertations - in many instances one-to-one. And they meet and work with students from around the world, some studying full time and others with jobs in the UK studying part-time, bringing their practical knowledge into the lecture room, discussions and project work.
Masters students at UTP universities are among the brightest and best of those developing careers in transport. With the first class education UTP universities provide, they have the potential to develop as tomorrow's leaders across the wide range of opportunities in transport - policy and planning, engineering, demand management, public transport, traffic, logistics, to name but some - in both the public and private sectors, in the UK and around the world
The UTP also makes connections between the universities and industry, through its active Employers' Forum , as well as with the professional bodies serving transport, with whom the UTP meets twice a year.
There are over 450 students studying for a Transport Masters at the UTP universities. Two thids of these are from the UK and one third from the rest of the world - just under half from other EU countries and just over half from other countries. Many of the UK students are studying part time, taking between 2 and 3 years to complete their Masters, and most of those are sponsored by their employer.
Whilst each UTP member determines the content of, teaches and arranges accreditation for their own courses, independently, they work together in the development of course content and methods of course delivery, as well as with employers to ensure that the courses meet the evolving needs of the market, and with the profession to enhance transport as a career.
UTP universities fully recognise that good teaching is a real skill, learned and honed through experience, constantly assessing evolving needs. The quality of teaching at UTP universities is strengthened by keeping up to date with new developments, through being directly involved in research and working with other researchers. The work of professional academics is complemented by external lecturers from the profession, relating key topics to practice, and to political realities.
In addition to teaching “in the classroom”, there are strong elements of individual and group research, designed to help students develop the capability to find things out, assess them and form judgments This work is closely supervised by key academics, who challenge and guide the students on a one-to-one basis.
